TRENTON, N.J. (WCBS 880) — Gov. Phil Murphy has announced that all of New Jersey's mega vaccination sites will close by the end of July.
During his daily briefing Wednesday, Murphy said the state will transition away from the mega-site model to instead rely on administering shots at about 1,800 community-based centers.
Sites in Atlantic and Gloucester counties stopped giving first doses on Wednesday.
The mega-site at the Meadowlands in Bergen County will administer its final first dose on Friday.
"These sites will remain open to ensure that everyone who scheduled their second doses at these sites receives it," Murphy said.
First doses at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall in Morris County will be administered on June 23 and the final day for second doses on July 16.
The Middlesex County mega-site at the New Jersey Expo Center will give its final round of first shots on June 26 and the last follow up doses on July 17.
The Burlington County site at Moorestown Mall will discontinue administering first doses on July 1 and will remain open for second shots until July 23.
The federally-run community vaccination center at the New Jersey Institute of Technology will remain open until June 20.
New Jersey has administered more than 8.7 million vaccine doses as of Wednesday. About 4.2 million New Jersey residents are now fully vaccinated.
The mega-sites have delivered nearly 2 million doses and fully vaccinated more than 950,000 people.
Murphy said New Jersey is making progress when it comes to vaccinating children 12 and up.
"More than 5.3 New Jerseyans age 12 and older have now received at least their first dose, and that's more than 70% of the total vaccine eligible population," Murphy said. "We are one of only six states and the largest to crack 70% of the 12 and up population having at least their first doses."
Wednesday marked the governor's 200th COVID-19 briefing.
