ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP (1010 WINS) — A 27-year-old children’s baseball coach was arrested Thursday for sexually abusing a 16-year-old boy who played on a Rockaway Township team, according to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.

Joseph Derose Jr., who also worked as a substitute teacher at Catherine A. Dwyer Elementary School, allegedly started abusing the child in May 2021 through Jan. 2022.

The victim was 16 when the abuse started and 17 when it stopped, according to prosecutors.

Officials accused Derose of abusing the boy at both of their homes, the Oak Meadows Field in Rockaway Township and the Fitness Factory Gym in Rockaway Borough.

Prosecutors charged him with sexual assault with supervisory power over the victim, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal sexual conduct.

He’s being held at Morris County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing Wednesday.
