ASBURY PARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey mother has pleaded guilty to the fatal overdose of her 2-year-old son, prosecutors said Friday.

Quanique Smith, 26, pleaded guilty Tuesday to a single count of aggravated manslaughter, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago said in a statement.

Asbury Park police officers were called to a Langford Street apartment shortly after 1 a.m. on Jan. 5 for a report of an unresponsive child, and when they arrived, they rushed him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

An investigation revealed that heroin and fentanyl belonging to Smith had been left in the home and within reach of the child and his 5-year-old sibling, the prosecutor said. He ingested a fatal dose of the drugs.

Smith was arrested later that day and taken to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution before being indicted for aggravated manslaughter, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, hindering apprehension and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child in late March.

She is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 7 and is expected to face eight years in state prison, Santiago said.
