ALLENDALE, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A New Jersey police officer was charged on Thursday for allegedly giving his personal vehicle to a person involved in a traffic accident, then telling another officer that he was the driver.
Victor Bartoloma, 35, an Allendale police officer, was charged with hindering apprehension.
On Sunday, Jan. 15, Bartoloma "provided his personal vehicle to a driver involved in the accident so the driver could leave the scene," according to a statement from Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella.
Bartoloma then told a responding officer from Ridgewood, that he was the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash, Musella said.
Surveillance footage, however, showed that Bartoloma was not the driver involved in the crash and was not present at the time of the accident, Musella added.
was released pending a first appearance in court.
Bartoloma has been suspended without pay from his duties as a police officer, the prosecutor's office said.
