TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- New Jersey's daily COVID-19 death toll surpassed 100 for the second day in a row on Wednesday, Gov. Phil Murphy said.

The state reported 103 COVID-19-related fatalities on Wednesday, pushing its statewide death toll to 16,521, Murphy said at a news briefing.

On Tuesday, New Jersey reported 104 new COVID-19-related deaths — the state's "first triple-digit day of fatalities… since June 3," the governor said.

As of Tuesday night, 3,841 New Jerseyans were hospitalized with confirmed or probable COVID-19 cases, 765 of whom were in intensive care and 485 of whom were on ventilators, Murphy said.

New Jersey also reported 4,919 new positive COVID-19 test results, bringing its cumulative total to 445,138.

"The numbers remain sobering — and they remain the biggest reason why we can't get lax in our precautions, in our social distancing, and in wearing our masks," Murphy said.

"And it's the reason why this year cannot be the year for the large Christmas with family and friends," he added. "Our health care workers are doing heroic things, but it is up to us to keep our loved ones out of the hospital."
