NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York state reported 1,447 new coronavirus cases on Friday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday as the state continues to focus on beating back the virus in "red zone" hotspot areas.

Cuomo said there were 3,901 tests in the red zones Friday, yielding 193 positives for a 4.95% positivity rate. In the remainder of the state, 130,678 tests were reported, with 1,254 positives, or 0.96%, coming back positive.

Out of a total of 134,579 tests statewide, 1.07% came back positive Friday. On Thursday, there were 1,592 new cases and a 1.14% positivity rate statewide.

The governor said the red zones—including in parts of Brooklyn and Queens, as well as Rockland and Orange counties—are 2.8% of the state population but accounted for 13.3% of all positive cases Friday and 17.9% of positive cases this week.

The positivity rate for test results this past week in the red zones has been 6.17%, which is down slightly from the prior week, Cuomo said.

"Our numbers remain good news, even as clusters appear in certain areas of the state. Our testing system is so advanced that we were able to track clusters to 2.8% of the state's population and attack the virus within that population," Cuomo said in a statement Saturday.

There were 826 people hospitalized Friday, an increase of 47 patients from Thursday's 779 and the highest number since July 15. There were 754 hospitalized Wednesday.

Of those hospitalized Friday, 179 were in intensive care and 81 required intubation.

There were eight more deaths reported statewide on Friday, including two people in the Bronx and one person in Brooklyn.
