Officials discover Fort Drum soldier dead in wooded area in New Jersey days after reported missing

BYRAM, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A soldier who was reported missing from Fort Drum was found dead in a New Jersey wooded area over the weekend, officials confirmed.

Sussex County First Assistant Prosecutor Gregory Mueller told NJ.com that 20-year-old Army Cpl. Hayden Harris was found shot to death and a fellow soldier suspected in his killing was taken into custody.


"We are devastated," Brig. Gen. Brett Funck, acting senior commander for Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division, wrote in a statement on Facebook.

"It was well known here that Cpl. Harris was a great Soldier, and as we share our grief with his friends and family. His death is a tremendous loss for his loved ones, this division and our nation," Funck added.

According to a release from the US Army, Harris was last heard from sometime late Thursday into early Friday and was scheduled to drive his 2016 Ford Mustang coupe to Watertown, New York for "some type of vehicle transaction."

Members of the Byram Township fire department spotted blood, a pair of shoes, and paperwork on Ross Road which then led police to Harris' body NJ.com reports.

The report adds that his suspected killer is currently being held by New York authorities and is expected to face extradition to New Jersey after charges are filed in Sussex County.

Harris was assigned to Fort Drum in July 2019 after he joined the Army in March 2019 .

He leaves behind his mother, father and sister, according to Army officials.
