
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Tributes are pouring in for Jimmy Carter, the 39th U.S. president, who died Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia. America's longest-lived former president, he served in the White House from 1977 to 1981 and went on to spend decades as a global humanitarian with his wife Rosalynn Carter. His state funeral will be held Jan. 9. The Carter Center is encouraging people to remember him at JimmyCarterTribute.org.

12 PM – Walter Mondale’s son to read eulogy for Carter
The son of former Vice President Walter Mondale will read a eulogy that Mondale himself had planned to deliver for Jimmy Carter.
Mondale, who served as Carter’s vice president, died in 2021 but left behind the eulogy, the New York Times reported.
His son, Ted Mondale, now plans to read it during Carter’s memorial service on Jan. 9 at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
10:30 AM -- NYSE to close markets on Jan. 9 to honor Carter
The New York Stock Exchange will close trading on Jan. 9 in honor of former President Jimmy Carter.
“The NYSE will respectfully honor President Carter’s lifetime of service to our nation by closing our markets on the National Day of Mourning,” Lynn Martin, president of NYSE Group, said in a statement.
The U.S. flag displayed above the NYSE will also fly at half-staff in honor of Carter throughout the mourning period, Martin said.
The NYSE held a moment of silence Monday morning, just before the opening bell, to pay tribute to the life and service of Carter.
President Joe Biden has declared Jan. 9 a National Day of Mourning for Carter, whose state funeral is also expected to take place that day.
The closure is an age-old tradition on Wall Street, where financial institutions close to mark the death of a U.S. president, the last being former President George H. W. Bush in late 2018.

9 AM -- Remembering Jimmy Carter's trip to the Bronx
President Jimmy Carter visited a blighted area of the South Bronx on Oct. 5, 1977—a trip to show his commitment to the nation's cities.
Carter's trip to Charlotte Street came just two years after President Gerald Ford declined to support a bailout for New York City, leading to the famous Daily News front page, "FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD."
Carter vowed to assist the area, but little changed in the immediate term, and Ronald Reagan also visited Charlotte Street in 1980—as he campaigned against Carter on the issue of urban blight.

7 AM -- Empire State Building honors Carter, who left mark on NYC
The Empire State Building was lit in red, white and blue on Sunday night "to honor the life and legacy" of Carter.


The former president left a mark on New York City after his presidency. In 1984, he volunteered to help restore 742 East 6th St. in the East Village at a time when the neighborhood was among the most dangerous in the city. He and his wife Rosalynn Carter spent 10 days working with Habitat for Humanity on the dilapidated six-story building.

6:30 AM -- Carter's state funeral will be Jan. 9
President Joe Biden has scheduled a state funeral in Washington for former President Jimmy Carter on Jan. 9.
Biden also declared Jan. 9 as a National Day of Mourning across the U.S. Carter, the longest-lived former president, died Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia. He was 100.
Biden also ordered U.S. flags to fly at half-staff for 30 days from Sunday.
“Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia,” The Carter Center said in posting about his death on the social media platform X. It added in a statement that he died peacefully, surrounded by his family.
