NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A group of Port Authority police officers staged a heroic rescue after a dog's paw got trapped in a PATH station escalator on Wednesday.

Officers Anthony Manfredini and Matthew Maiello were inside the Journal Square PATH Station in New Jersey around 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday when they heard whimpering, yelping and screaming, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said in a press release.

As the cops rushed to the sounds of alarm, they spotted a pup with his left paw caught in the base of an escalator, the agency said.

The dog’s distraught owner was shouting for help, the release said.

Officer Manfredini managed to stop the escalator by pushing an emergency button while Officer Maiello called for backup, the agency said.

Emergency Service Officers Mark Legic, Andrew Vignapiano and Eric Block arrived soon after, removing a grate from the escalator’s stairs and freeing the dog’s paw.

The accident left the pup, whose name is Scott, with several cuts and puncture wounds to his paw, the agency said.

Sergeant Angel Lopez escorted the dog's owner to a taxi stand flagged down a cab and paid her fare so she could take her pet to the vet, the release said.
