NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo will not be attending President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday amid reports that Trump supporters could hold demonstrations at the New York State Capitol in Albany.
“Wednesday is Inauguration Day. I was planning to go to the inauguration,” Cuomo said at a news briefing on Monday. “I’m not going to go to the inauguration.”
“There have been reports from law enforcement sources that there is talk of doing demonstrations at state capitols, and they have done an advisory that state capitols should beware of potential demonstrations,” he explained.
“We saw what happened in Washington [D.C.] a couple of weeks ago,” he added. “I think that my place is to stay in New York state, given this possible circumstance.”
New York has state police officers “on standby” in the event of protests, the governor said.
Biden and his team, he noted, were not upset by Cuomo’s change of plans, he noted.
“I sent my best wishes to President- elect Biden. He’s a good friend and it’s going to be a great day,” he said.
“Many members of his team I’ve worked for many, many years,” he added. “I chatted with them this morning, and they understand.”
