NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s youngest daughter, Michaela Kennedy-Cuomo, said this week that she identifies as demisexual.
According to the Demisexuality Resource Center, “Demisexuality is a sexual orientation in which someone feels sexual attraction only to people with whom they have an emotional bond.”
Last month, Kennedy-Cuomo, 23, came out as queer in an Instagram post. In a conversation this week with Donato Tramuto, the former CEO of Tivity Health, she said she identifies most with demisexuality.
“I would say to anyone who’s struggling with their identity that we limit ourselves when we hide our eccentricities or queerness of any kind to fit into socially constructed boxes, and as long as we’re growing, we’re evolving,” Kennedy-Cuomo told Tramuto.
“When I was in elementary school, I feared that I was lesbian,” she said. “When I was in middle school, I came out to my family and close friends as bisexual. When I was in high school, I discovered pansexuality and thought, ‘That’s the flag for me.’ And I’ve recently learned more about demisexuality, and have believed that that identity resonates with me most.”
“So I think that we’re always evolving and growing, and trying to label ourselves only limits us,” she added. “These spectrums are as fluid as we are and attachments to labels only restricts us. I think that anyone who says otherwise is coming from a place of fear and not love. And that there are many more sentiments sent and felt of being seen, loved and worthy than there are attacks that you'll get when you come out. And that your uniqueness is what connects you, and your authenticity is your superpower, and every day is a new opportunity to embrace our fullest, best selves. So just love yourself at every stage, because we're changing, but start today. You are so, so loved and so worthy of love.”
