
WESTBURY, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A man injured an officer as he resisted arrest during a traffic stop on Long Island on Wednesday afternoon, Nassau County Police said.
At about at 4:20 p.m., police observed a 2012 Honda Civic traveling northbound on Merrick Avenue in Westbury with dark tinted windows and a cover over the rear license plate.
According to detectives, the vehicle began to travel at a high rate of speed and police activated the emergency lights, initiating a traffic stop.
The Honda then proceeded to make an abrupt left turn into a parking lot located at 715 Merrick Avenue, while failing to signal.
The driver, William Peralta, 27, then quickly exited the vehicle and began walking away from the officers.
After ignoring several verbal commands, police attempted to place him into custody.
A struggle ensued and an officer sustained injuries during the course of the arrest, police said.
After a brief struggle, officers were eventually able to secure Peralta.
The injured officer was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Peralta was charged with assault, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations.
