NEW CASSEL, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A 42-year-old homeless man was arrested for beating another man using a tire reamer Thursday afternoon on Long Island, authorities said.

According to detectives, at 1 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Prospect Avenue for a 44-year-old man that was involved in an altercation with Pedro Hernandez.

Hernandez struck the victim in the back of the head and repeatedly punched him in the face while holding a metal tire reamer, officials said.

The victim attempted to block Hernandez from striking him, resulting in a cut to his left hand.

The victim was struck on his nose, lip, and right eye causing a severe injury, multiple lacerations and substantial pain, police said.

Hernandez then fled the scene.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for his injuries.

A short time later, officers located Hernandez in a parking lot across the street from 851 Prospect Ave. where he was placed into custody.

Hernandez is facing assault charges and will be arraigned on Friday.
