NANUET, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A Rockland County high school student is facing felony charges after allegedly bringing a loaded gun to school on Monday.

Nanuet High School staff received an anonymous tip about the student, Clarkstown police said.

The staff immediately alerted the school resource officer, who searched the student's belongings and found the handgun around 3 p.m.

The officer secured the weapon and notified the Clarkstown Detective Bureau to respond to the scene, and the teen was placed under arrest.

Police said there have been no reports of any threats made to students or staff by the suspect, and an investigation is ongoing.

"The safety of the students and staff is our top priority and we will continue to work diligently to provide the safest environment possible," police said in their release.

Nanuet School District Superintendent Kevin McCahill said in a statement Monday that the district "has a zero-tolerance policy against unlawful behavior in our schools" and "that the student in question will not be present in school pending disciplinary action, which may include criminal charges."

The student has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds, both felonies.

"We encourage our students, families, and community to always report safety incidents or concerns to our department," police added.
