NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- More than three dozen students at a Long Island school tested positive for COVID-19 after attending several "superspreader" parties and gatherings, forcing the school to shift to remote learning until the end of the month, officials said.

In a letter sent out to parents on Tuesday, Manhasset Secondary School officials said 38 students tested positive for the virus after attending events "within the past 10 days."

"These parties/gatherings have become superspreader events that have resulted in an alarming increase in the number of positive COVID-19 cases throughout the community," the letter said.

As a result, the school will shift to all-remote learning Feb. 22 through "at least" Feb. 26. Extracurricular activities, including sports, will be suspended during that time, the letter noted.

"Please note that all identified cases are in isolation and their close contacts have been quarantined by the Department of Health," the letter said. "Many of the students who have tested positive have been asymptomatic causing a false sense of security."

"If your child attended a party/gathering, or has been in contact with someone who attended a party/gathering over the past 10 days, it is imperative that you contact your healthcare provider regarding testing and that they quarantine immediately — so as to limit the spread of COVID-19," the letter added.

"These disconcerting actions by members of our community continue to put our entire school community at risk and cause a heightened sense of fear and anxiety."
