LONG BEACH, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A search for a missing swimmer at Long Beach was called off Thursday night after no one was found in the darkened waters, fire officials said.

Emergency responders descended on the beach near Edwards Boulevard around 8:45 p.m. after getting calls about the swimmer, according to the Long Beach Fire Department.

Witnesses said a man had gone into the water about 45 minutes before and never came out.

An "extensive search" by water and air was unable to locate the man, the fire department said.

The marine search was called off, but air units will continue searching for him, according to officials.

The agencies involved in the search included the U.S. Coast Guard, Nassau County Police Marine and Aviation and NYPD Special Operations, as well as rescue resources from more than a half-dozen fire departments in the area.
