SOMERS POINT, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey parkway toll overcharged thousands of drivers’ E-ZPasses last month, NJ Advance reported.

The toll plaza on the Garden State Parkway in Atlantic County processed cars as trucks and charged them a higher rate after a cable tie on the gantry snapped at the Great Egg Harbor toll plaza in Somers Point.

A spokesperson for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority told NJ Advance that the cable sagged and partially obscured a sensor which determines vehicle classification.

An average of 4,000 drivers per day were affected and charged $3.92 ($3.72 off-peak) as opposed to $1.96, according to officials.

The agency learned of the problem last week after “two or three” drivers were allegedly overcharged.

“Drivers don’t have to do anything to have it corrected,” the spokesperson said. “The fix will happen automatically. The erroneous class two charges will be replaced with the correct class one charges.”

The issue occurred between Sept. 20 and Sept. 29 and customers can check for the wrong charges on their accounts using the NJ E-ZPass app or website. Corrections are estimated to take about seven days to appear.
