NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- "Significant snowfall" is looking more likely for the New York City area this weekend, just as another Arctic freeze engulfs the city, forecasters said Wednesday.

AccuWeather is watching the track of the monster storm—and it’s still unclear how hard it may hit on Sunday—but 4 inches or more can't be ruled out as the forecast takes shape in the days ahead.

The current polar chill will subside Thursday, with highs set to reach 45 degrees in the city. But a brutal cold snap is set to return Saturday and linger through much of next week.

Temps will turn colder Friday and then struggle to reach 20 degrees on Saturday and Sunday. RealFeels will near 0 degrees both days. Frostbite will be a real danger for anyone venturing outdoors.

Snow estimates are still fluctuating, but anywhere from 4 to 8 inches looks possible from Sunday to Monday, according to Wednesday's forecast.

The combination of ice-cold temperatures and heavy snow could paralyze travel not only in the Tri-State area on Sunday and Monday but also across much of the East Coast. Big cities like Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, Atlanta and Charlotte are also in the path of the storm.
