NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – So long, summer! It's been pleasant all week in the New York City area, but the start of the fall season Saturday will usher in a weekend washout as Tropical Storm Ophelia brings heavy downpours, 40 mph gusts, cooler temps and the risk of coastal flooding.

Summer is going out with a bang Friday—it's gorgeous with mostly sunny skies and highs of around 70.

But the beautiful weather won't last as Ophelia moves up the East Coast and brings turbulent weather on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Impacts of the storm will begin to be felt Friday night into Saturday, according to AccuWeather.

The National Weather Service issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the entire New York City area. Parts of the Jersey Shore are also under coastal flood warnings and advisories.

When all is said and done, the Jersey Shore could see 2 to 3 inches of rain, while a widespread 1 to 3 inches of rain may be seen elsewhere.

Saturday will be cloudy, cool and increasingly windy with periods of rain throughout the day.

Gusts up to 35 or 40 mph are possible in the five boroughs and inland suburbs, while they could top 50 mph in the coastal suburbs.

There will also be a risk of rip currents, high surf and minor coastal flooding at times of high tide. A High Surf Advisory was issued for Brooklyn, Queens and the South Shore, with large breaking waves of 5 to 11 feet expected.

The nasty weather will come as the Global Citizen Festival returns Saturday to Central Park. The festival, which features numerous performers like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ms. Lauryn Hill and Jung Kook, is a rain-or-shine event.
