NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Flood Watch is in place for New York City’s surrounding areas on Friday as rainstorms continue, bringing a soggy start to the weekend that forecasters predict will clear up just in time for a sunny Mother’s Day.

The Flood Watch is in effect until 1 a.m. Saturday for Long Island, the Hudson Valley, New Jersey’s Bergen and Passaic counties and Connecticut, according to AccuWeather. The watch spares NYC proper, though the possibility of minor urban flooding from a full day of heavy precipitation remains.

NYC Emergency Management warned about the moderate to heavy thunderstorms, noting that rainfall totals are expected to range from 1 to 2 inches, with potential for more west and north of the city.

The heaviest rainfall came down early Friday morning and will taper off as the afternoon goes on, AccuWeather said. The afternoon will be cloudy with more showers at times, and ponding on streets and highways could result in travel delays. The high will max out at 60.

Mayor Eric Adams flagged NYC Emergency Management’s weather notice on social media, which warned New Yorkers of the possibility of localized flooding, hazardous travel conditions, potential lightning and gusty winds.

“It’s a rainy one out there today, New Yorkers,” Adams wrote. “Heavy showers and storms will continue throughout the day today. Please remember to take it slow and watch out for flooded areas.”

The night will be cloudy and breezy with occasional rain and drizzle, especially during the evening, and temperatures will drop to a low of 50, AccuWeather said.

While a morning shower can’t be ruled out north and east of the city on Saturday, times of sun and clouds will emerge as the high jumps to 71. This trend continues on Mother’s Day, which AccuWeather predicts will be “wonderful with sunshine” as highs top out at 73.

Monday will be another nice day with a high of 74 and plenty of sun, though clouds will build Tuesday in preparation for the next spring storm that night, AccuWeather said.
