NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Hazy skies returned to the New York City area on Tuesday as a potential heat wave was shaping up, with highs near or above 90 degrees expected much of the work week, according to AccuWeather.

Northwest winds that pushed out the rainy, humid weather from the weekend have brought smoke back down from eastern Canada, where more than 600 wildfires are still burning, 300 of them uncontrollably.

A plume of smoke hung over New York state, North Jersey and southwest Connecticut on Tuesday. The haze wasn't having a major impact on air quality in the city; the Air Quality Index was at a "moderate" level of about 55 in the afternoon. "Unhealthy" levels are reached when the AQI surpasses 100.

In addition to the haze, it will also be hot and sunny, with a high of 90 in the five boroughs and a RealFeel temperature of about 95. Lows will only dip into the 70s overnight.

Winds will be more southwesterly on Wednesday, pushing away the smoke but ushering the humidity back into the Tri-State.

Wednesday is expected to be the hottest day of the week. The high will be about 92 in the city but the humidity will push RealFeels near 100.

If the high reaches 90 again on Thursday, the city will be in a official heat wave, which is three or more consecutive days with temps of at least 90. The current forecast has Thursday's high at 89.

Either way, it will be hot and humid again Thursday under partly sunny skies. Afternoon thunderstorms could pop up in spots, especially northwest of the city.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely Thursday night and again on Friday, when it will be warm, sticky and cloudy. The high will be about 85.

The turbulent weather continues into the weekend, with showers and storms in the forecast Saturday and Sunday. Highs will be in the mid-80s both days.
