TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Starting May 4, the new ban on single-use plastic bags in grocery stores, restaurants and other shops will go into effect in New Jersey.

The new law also restricts paper bags, styrofoam containers and some other products.
Here’s what you need to know to be ready for the switch:
-Paper bags won’t be available in grocery stores over 2,500 square feet. Restaurants are allowed to continue using paper bags.
-Most stores will sell reusable bags, in case you forget yours at home.
-Polystyrene foam takeout containers, plates and utensils are banned.
-Plastic straws will be available only on request.
-Other forms of plastic bags for personal use like trash bags, food storage bags, dog waste bags etc. will still be legal.
-Plastic produce bags at grocery stores and other similar packaging for meat, fish and other food will still be available.
-Stores or individuals that violate the law can be fined $1,000 for the first offense and $5,000 for all subsequent offenses.
-The law will be enforced by the Department of Environmental Protection.
