Derrick Rose out at least eight weeks after ankle surgery

The Knicks received some much-needed good news on Wednesday with the return of Obi Toppin from health and safety protocols, but the team was dealt a devastating blow just hours later.

The Knicks announced Wednesday evening that veteran point guard Derrick Rose underwent ankle surgery and will miss at least eight weeks. Rose had been sidelined the past two games for what the team was calling right ankle soreness.

Rose has been an invaluable spark off the New York bench so far this season, averaging 12 points and four assists over 26 games, shooting 40 percent from downtown in the process. The former MVP signed a three year, $43 million deal to return to New York back in August after he ignited new life into the Knicks offense after being acquired from Detroit midway through last season.

Rose took over the prominent point guard role in last season's postseason series against the Hawks, and has arguably been the team's most important player this season.
