Ex-Jets center Kevin Mawae headed to Indy as an assistant offensive line coach

A former Jets legend can be found pacing the Colts sideline next season – Football Hall of Famer Kevin Mawae is headed to Indianapolis as an assistant offensive line coach, according to The Athletic.

Mawae spent 16 seasons playing center in the NFL, half of that career as the anchor for the Jets’ offensive line. His eight-year stint in New York spanned from 1998 to 2005, and he appeared in all 166 games of each of his first seven seasons with the Jets before being limited to just six games in ’05, his age 34 season.

Mawae began his playing career as a guard for the Seahawks, and after his lengthy Jets tenure, finished out his career with the Titans. All seven of his career playoff games came with Gang Green, with the Jets going 3-4 in those contests. Mawae’s final postseason appearance was in the Jets’ 20-17 loss to the Steelers in the divisional round of the 2005 playoffs.

The 2019 Hall of Fame inductee earned eight Pro Bowl selections, including six straight during his time with the Jets. His coaching experience includes one season with the Bears as an offensive line coach in 2016, and most recently he was an offensive analyst at Arizona State for coach Herm Edwards, Mawae’s former head coach for five seasons with the Jets.

The Colts went 11-5 last season, good for second in the AFC South, and fell in 27-24 to the Bills in the Wild Card round. Indianapolis had the seventh-highest offensive line grading in the league this season, according to Pro Football Focus.
