The 2021 season hasn’t been the smoothest for Francisco Lindor in what will be his first of 11 under contract to the Mets, but he had his signature moment on Sunday night by blasting three home runs, and earning a curtain call, in a 7-6 victory over the Yankees.
Of course, even that was not without controversy, as Lindor made a whistling gesture at the Yankees’ dugout after the second home run in response to the thought that the Yankees were using whistles to indicate Taijuan Walker’s tipped pitches on Saturday.
"I don't know... it sounded like there was something going on," Lindor said.
That led to Giancarlo Stanton confronting Lindor a bit as he rounded the bases after a homer the following inning, and the benches cleared as emotions ran high on both teams.
"I don't think he was trying to fight, I think he was just saying 'I can do it too,’ and I respect that," Lindor said.
"Both teams probably misinterpreted right there."
Francisco clapped back, though, smacking a go-ahead homer in the eighth that cemented the game, becoming the first player in Subway Series history to record a three-homer game.
"This is the Francisco that we all expect, and I think this is the Francisco that the Mets fan base are going to get for years," Mets manager Luis Rojas said. "It capped was an exciting emotional weekend between two good teams.”
And, it brought Lindor back into the fans’ good graces, as he earned a curtain call for the efforts.
"I don't think Mets fans forget things, but it definitely probably helped them to start believing in me a little bit more,” Lindor smiled. “When I came out of the dugout and acknowledged them, it was special for sure. It was a cool moment in my career. It was a good day, I'm glad we ended up on top."
