Corey Davis: Zach Wilson 'coming into his own' as a leader

Corey Davis is back with the Jets after missing much of the second half of 2021 due to injury, and already, he’s seeing big strides on the field from Zach Wilson.

“He’s a great leader man, definitely coming into his own,” Davis said Thursday in his first training camp media sessions. “He’s out there encouraging everybody and bringing guys along with him. He’s made some big steps from last year.”

Much of that is communication.

“In the huddle, he’s communicating more, telling guys what he wants from them, and he’ll tell us little things while breaking the huddle,” Davis said. “It’s communication inside and outside the huddle. He knows the little things go a long way.”

Like Wilson, Davis, too, is trying to be a leader in a still-young Jets receiver room.

“I definitely view myself as a leader, and just try to teach guys what I know,” he said. “I’ve been in the league a little bit and made some playoff runs, and I know a little about what it takes to go far in this league. Just trying to be more vocal, teach these guys and lead as much as I can.”

That starts with realizing that perception is reality – in this case, leading by example.

“Everything correlates – someone once told me that how you do anything is how you do everything, so I come out here and I’m intentional in how I do everything on and off the field,” Davis said. “Just trying to bring guys along and be as unselfish as I can.”

Davis is happy to be back on the field after a “tough” fall and winter following his first-ever season-ending injury, which led him to getting into the best shape possible for camp.

“I actually lost some weight, I did a lot of running and high-interval training to try to get in the best shape I could so I could hit the ground running,” he said. “Feels a little different – my joints are thanking me, but I’m definitely running better, and hope to keep it that way.”

So, too, do the Jets, although Davis noted that he thinks the team is loaded as they try to make a run in Year 2 of the Robert Saleh era.

“We have a lot of weapons,” Davis said. “We have a lot of dudes on the field that can do a lot with the ball, and that helps everybody complement each other.”
