The nightmare season for the Mets just keeps getting worse.

The team placed infielder Marcus Semien on the 10-day injured list on Thursday, just hours after the 35-year-old committed two of New York's six errors in an ugly loss to the Cubs. The Mets listed the injury as a left hip flexor strain.

Semien booted a ground ball and dropped a pop fly, though he spoke with reporters after the game and did not make any hints about an injury.

One of the top offseason acquisitions by the Mets, Semien was brought to Queens in the trade that sent Brandon Nimmo to the Rangers. The two-time Gold Glove winner was part of David Stearns' "run prevention" initiative, though Wednesday's six-error disaster was the latest piece of evidence that the movement towards prioritizing defense has not worked out. Luis Robert Jr., acquired with hopes of stabilizing the defense in center field, is still injured after logging just 98 plate appearances so far this season.

Semien is posting a -0.6 WAR in 2026, a mark that would be the lowest of his career. He is batting .214 with a .613 OPS, which would also be a career worst. He has nine home runs and 29 RBI on the year.

Injuries have played a major role in the Mets' rough season, as the likes of Semien, Robert, Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, Clay Holmes, Francisco Alvarez, and Ronny Mauricio are just some of the key contributors who have missed time this season.
