The Yankees aren’t playing on Thursday, but they did make a move, acquiring outfielder Tim Locastro from the Diamondbacks for Double-A pitcher Keegan Curtis, as first reported by The Athletic.
Locastro will give the Yankees some outfield depth, with Aaron Hicks done for the year, Brett Gardner and Clint Frazier badly struggling and Aaron Judge needing reps in center field to help with the thin depth.
The 28-year-old Locastro has been awful at the plate in 2021, slashing .178/.271/.220 with one home run for the lowly Diamondbacks. In five big-league seasons, he is batting .234 with a .663 OPS and just four home runs. He stole a career-high 17 bases in 2019 and has stolen five bags this season. He does boast one of the top sprint speeds in baseball, per Statcast, tied for second in the league this season with Nationals shortstop Trea Turner.
Locastro has primarily played center field this season and has been just about league average in terms of defensive runs saved.
Curtis, a 25-year-old righty, was drafted in the 22nd round by the Yanks in 2018, and had a 3.94 ERA in 12 games with Somerset this season, all in relief.
