Readin', Writin', and Reason with Dom Giordano | Episode 56

The Importance of Merit

Dom Giordano, WPHT host and former teacher, has dedicated much of his daily show toward parents who are taking it into their own hands to push back against school boards that have a negative impact on their children. This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards.

First, Giordano welcomes back in Pennridge School District President Joan Cullen onto the podcast to discuss her district’s decision to end its diversity program. First, Giordano greets Cullen, joking whether there is a team at the Inquirer dedicated to following her actions after their repeated reporting of her conservative tendencies. Then, Giordano asks Cullen about the decision itself, with Cullen explaining why Pennridge decided to take this stance on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs, telling of the divisive nature wrought on by the program, including white privilege and equity of outcomes.

Then, Kenny Xu, author of An Inconvenient Minority: The Attack on Asian American Excellence and the Fight for Meritocracy, rejoins Readin’ Writin’ and Reason to dissect a Harvard report into the history of the University’s ties to slavery. The new report, titled ‘Havard and the Legacy of Slavery’ is making headlines after Harvard President Larry Bacow pledged to earmark $100 million dedicated to repair past wrongs. Xu gives his opinion on the initiative and the report, and ties it back to Harvard’s discrimination against Asian-American students, pointing to a clear double standard when dealing with both situations.
