The recall of Banana Boat sunscreen products is being expanded, as more products have been found to have a cancer-causing chemical in them, according to the company.

Edgewell Personal Care Company announced that more products would be added to its nationwide recall, first issued in July 2022. The US Food and Drug Administration posted an update to the recall last Friday.

The recall was the result of a review after it was found that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant, despite the product not having it as an ingredient.

Benzene has been classified by the FDA as a human carcinogen that could cause cancers, such as leukemia and blood cancer of the blood marrow. The chemical is also responsible for causing life-threatening blood disorders, according to the administration.

Among the additional items to be recalled is the Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Spray SPF that comes in 6 oz.

The recall says that affected products have the lot code 20301CF, with an expiration date of September 2023; lot code 20016AF, with an expiration date of December 2022; lot code 20084BF, with an expiration date of February 2023; and lot code 21139AF, with an expiration date of April 2024.

Edgewell Personal Care Company shared in the recall notice that, at this time, no other products or batches are being recalled.

The company has shared that daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences, citing an independent health assessment.

Anyone who owns any of the recalled products is advised to stop using them immediately, throw them away, and contact Edgewell Personal Care at 1-888-686-3988 or visit the company's website to receive a refund.

No adverse reactions have been reported as a result of using the products, but those who have, are asked to report their experience to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program. To learn how, visit the program’s website here.
