HOLLY TWP. (WWJ) -- A Michigan congresswoman was the target of a swatting hoax in Oakland County overnight.
The office of Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin said police were sent to her Holly Township home Thursday night in response to a "false threat" report, which was emailed to a local official.
Slotkin was not home at the time.
Michigan State Police checked out the property and confirmed that no one was in danger.
Lynsey Mukomel, a spokeswoman for the congresswoman, told the Detroit News, in a statement: "Congresswoman Slotkin is deeply grateful for the swift and professional response by law enforcement to this unfortunate incident, and that U.S. Capitol Police will be following up to investigate and hopefully hold accountable those responsible."
Swatting is a recent trend that sees people make fake threats to the police, usually online, with the intention of having them respond to unsuspecting locations in force.
Dozens of members of Congress have been swatted in recent months -- including Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, and Senator Rick Scott of Florida.
Slotkin, who is serving her third term in the House, won the Democratic primary election Tuesday for Michigan's open U.S. Senate seat. She will face former Congressman Mike Rogers in November.
