Marquez, 2 Others Earn Cubs' Minor League Honors

(670 The Score) The Cubs on Tuesday named Class-A Eugene infielder Pedro Martinez their minor league player of the month for July and Double-A Tennessee left-hander Jack Patterson and Single-A Myrtle Beach left-hander Brailyn Marquez their co-pitchers of the month.

Martinez, 18, hit a combined .402 with one homer, 11 RBIs and 12 runs in 23 games split between Rookie League Mesa and Single-A Eugene. He's hitting .380 with two homers, 20 RBIs and 14 steals in 36 games this season.

Patterson, 24, threw 23 2/3 scoreless innings for a 0.00 ERA in five starts for Single-A Myrtle Beach in July. His superb work earned him a promotion to Double-A Tennessee on Monday. He struck out 24 batters, walked eight and held foes to a .104 batting average in July. Patterson is 7-1 with a 1.50 ERA in 21 appearances, including six starts, this season.

Marquez, 20, posted a 1.65 ERA and struck out 41 batters across 27 1/3 innings in five starts for Class-A South Bend in July. His performance earned him a promotion to advanced Class-A Myrtle Beach on Monday. Marquez was named a Midwest League All-Star earlier this season. He has a 3.61 ERA and has struck out 102 batters in 77 1/3 innings across 17 starts this season.
