(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Bears will make a fashion statement in their primetime clash against the Washington Commanders on Thursday evening at Soldier Field.
For the first time in the modern helmet-wearing era, the franchise will be donning a non-navy blue helmet. The Bears will debut their new alternate orange helmets. Announced this past summer, the orange lids will be worn with their alternate orange jerseys and feature the traditional wishbone C helmet decal colored in navy blue and outline in white as well as a navy blue facemask.
“We believe we have the best uniforms in sport, certainly among the most iconic," Bears chairman George McCaskey said. "So, we’re not looking to overhaul it. We just want to make enhancements to the existing look from time to time and we think this is a great enhancement. I’m very excited for this modification. I like that it’s staying within the traditional Bears look. We’re excited about them and hope the fans will be too."
Several Bears players are excited about the helmets.
"It's pretty sweet," linebacker Roquan Smith said. "It’s a helmet. It’s orange. It’s different. But I think it’s pretty cool just to go out looking like a highlighter or something. It will be cool."
The Bears also plan on playing with the orange helmets when they visit the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 30.
After the NFL in 2021 relaxed a previous rule that outlawed franchises from wearing more than one helmet, the Bears are among several teams to showcase alternate helmets this season.
