Givens, 32, has a 2.66 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 40 games this season. Givens has a career 3.34 ERA in eight MLB seasons. The Cubs signed him to a one-year deal in March. The contract also includes a mutual option for 2023.

In return, Chicago received minor league right-hander Saul Gonzalez, who has a 2.81 ERA in 25 2/3 innings across 14 appearances at Class-A St. Lucie this season. Gonzalez was a 23rd-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft.

Givens will join a Mets team with championship expectations, as New York is 65-37 and sits in first place in the NL East by 3.5 games over second-place Atlanta entering play Tuesday.
