(670 The Score) Amid the Cubs’ ugly seven-game losing streak, manager David Ross continues to keep his usual positive outlook.
“You try to pull from the positives,” Ross said on the Laurence Holmes Show on Tuesday afternoon. “I thought we played really good baseball going into that last road trip. The road trip wasn’t kind to us, but keep playing the way we’ve been playing – in a lot of games, we’ve played a lot of extra-inning games. We just got to get some hits. Some of the stats that have stood out are us just not getting hits with runners in scoring position, little things like that. And just continue to try to work on the things where we can continue to compete and find ways to win those close games. There’s not a whole lot to be down about other than we want to win more games than we’re winning.”
The Cubs have fallen to 23-37, which is good for fourth place in the NL Central, 11 games behind the division-leading Cardinals. The Cubs had a particularly rough weekend in New York, getting outscored 28-5 by the Yankees while being swept. That was followed by a 4-1 loss to the Padres on Monday night at Wrigley Field.
Another sell-off of veterans – notably star catcher Willson Contreras – feels inevitable for the Cubs leading up to the trade deadline on Aug. 2. Of course, that isn’t Ross’ focus. His focus is on the day ahead, not any longer into the future.
“We got to come to work every day with our mind on ‘Hey, we got to get better’ and where we can get better and improve,” Ross said. “We got a lot of games left.”
