Report: Cubs shortstop prospect Ed Howard suffers season-ending hip injury

(670 The Score) Cubs shortstop prospect Ed Howard will miss the remainder of this 2022 season due to a left hip injury, NBC Sports Chicago reported Tuesday night.

Playing for the high Class-A South Bend Cubs, Howard suffered the injury in a game on May 10 as he attempted to avoid a tag at first base. Team farm director Jared Banner confirmed the news to NBC Sports Chicago, adding that Howard is expected to make a full recovery. Details on the extent of the injury weren't immediately made clear.

The 20-year-old Howard was the Cubs’ first-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, as they selected him at No. 16 overall. He's a local product who attended Mount Carmel High School.

Howard has played in 103 games over the last two seasons in the minor leagues, hitting .229 with five home runs and 42 RBIs. He played in 23 games this season, hitting .244 with one home run and 11 RBIs.
