(670 The Score) Former White Sox star slugger Dick Allen, who won the American League Most Valuable Player award in 1972, died Monday afternoon.
Allen was 78 and passed away at his home in Wampum, Penn., according to a post on his Twitter account.
Allen played first base, third base and outfield throughout his 15-year MLB career, in which he played for the Phillies, Cardinals, Dodgers, White Sox and Athletics. Allen was a seven-time All-Star, earning those honors in each of his three seasons with the White Sox from 1972-’74.
Allen’s best season was in 1972, when he was the MVP award after hitting .308 with 37 homers, 113 RBIs and a 1.023 OPS in 148 games. His presence after being acquired by Chicago from the Los Angeles Dodgers helped rejuvenate a White Sox franchise that had been rumored to be considering relocation to a new city, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Allen hit 351 homers and had 1,119 RBIs in his career.
