The White Sox have hired former Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo as their new bench coach, general manager Rick Hahn confirmed Thursday as the team officially introduced Grifol as the 42nd manager in franchise history.

Montoyo, 57, compiled a 236-236 record in leading the Blue Jays across four seasons before he was fired in July.

“You’ll hear me say this a thousand times – if I’m the smartest guy in the room, we got a problem,” Grifol said. “I think that’s extremely important (to have Montoyo’s managerial experience). This guy has done it. He’s done it the last (four) years. He’s had success. I’m really happy to have him on board.”

White Sox pitching coach Ethan Katz and bullpen coach Curt Hasler will be retained on Grifol’s staff, Hahn said. The rest of the coaching staff positions are open and will largely be filled according to Grifol’s input.

“There will be some internal candidates within the White Sox organization for some of these spots, but I suspect at the end of the day, based on conversations that we’ve had over the last week or so or a couple weeks, that the majority of those spots will be filled by individuals outside the White Sox organization," Hahn said.
