With the chance to clinch the NFC East for the first time since 2015, the Washington Football Team will start Dwayne Haskins at quarterback. But the second-year quarterback’s days in Washington could be numbered.

According to a report from RADIO.COM Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora, “sources say that it is virtually certain” Haskins will not return to Washington in 2021.

Haskins, who was drafted with the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, was named the starter by Ron Rivera to start the season and a team captain, but his sophomore year in the NFL has not gone smoothly.

After struggling early in the season, it was reported Washington might bench Haskins if he struggled against the Baltimore Ravens. After the loss, in which he wasn’t benched, Haskins’ agent called out an unfair narrative in Washington.

That week, Rivera benched Haskins in favor of Kyle Allen and promoted Alex Smith to the No. 2 rule with Washington at 1-3 on the year. And, reportedly, one of the last straws was Haskins was overheard by teammates gloating about his personal stat line in the loss.

It was reported Haskins requested a trade at this point. La Canfora noted Washington was willing to trade him, but there was a limited market for the quarterback before the NFL trade deadline.

While he was the No. 3 quarterback, Haskins violated the team’s COVID-19 protocols during the team’s trip to play the New York Giants.

Haskins would return to action following a season-ending injury and Alex Smith sustained a calf injury against the San Francisco 49ers.

But after Haskins’ first start since Week 4, images and videos emerged of the quarterback partying indoors without a mask around several people, his second violation of COVID-19 protocols this season.

As a result, the team stripped him of his captaincy and they fined him $40,000. However, with Smith still unable to play due to the injury, Haskins would make a second-straight start against the Panthers with a chance at clinching the NFC East on the line.

In Week 16 against the Panthers, Haskins struggled and was benched in the 4th quarter. After the game, he spoke to the media from his home after leaving the stadium before his postgame press conference.

A three turnover day and a postgame mixup closed what could be the former first-round pick’s final start at FedEx Field.
