DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - As Jerry and Stephen Jones like to say over and over again, the Cowboys are always in the business of acquiring talent to make their football team better.
They have another opportunity to do just that by adding a 2019 first-round pick, who suddenly became more appealing after his legal troubles took a wild turn of events on Monday.
105.3 The Fan's Mike Fisher reported Monday on Shan and RJ that the Cowboys are "taking a look at the idea of DeAndre Baker."
The former Giants cornerback was released by New York in September after he was charged with four counts of robbery with a firearm in connection to an alleged incident in Miami, and he was placed on the NFL’s Commissioner’s Exempt shortly thereafter.
That all changed Monday when all charges against Baker stemming from the incident had been dropped by the Broward County Sheriff's Office.
According to the a release from the Sheriff's Office, Baker was being extorted by the attorney who represented three of his alleged victims.
The fallout of the case appears to clear the way for Baker to make a return to the NFL, and the Cowboys should be at the front of the line to take a flier on him after rookie cornerback Trevone Diggs was lost for several weeks with a broken foot.
"He was the 30th overall pick in the 2019 draft. The Cowboys had a second-round grade on him, which means they thought the same thing the Giants thought of him. That he was a late first round kind of talent. (He) was an All-American at Georgia, was a Jim Thorpe winner, 5-foot-11, 190 pounds, played 15 games for the Giants," Fish said on 105.3 The Fan. "The biggest thing is we're just a few months away from that entire secondary being free agents. Chidobe (Awuzie) is free, Jourdan Lewis will be free, Xavier Woods will be free. And so, it might very well be time to turn the page in the secondary. And here's a first-round, 23-year-old cornerback on the street, and the Cowboys are wise to take a look at this."
