'The worst I've ever been got': Cardinals Adam Wainwright admits he fell for Opening Day April Fools' prank

CINCINNATI (KMOX) - Even a veteran pitcher like Adam Wainwright – the oldest current player in the National League – can fall for a prank every now and then. He got, got good on Opening Day.

The longtime St. Louis Cardinals ace says it was all the doing of the team's bullpen catcher Jamie Pogue. You can hear him tell the story in the audio at the top of this page.

To preface the story, you need to know that Waino loves to swing the bat and is very much against the designated hitter coming to the NL. There was rumors throughout the offseason that it could become permanent in 2021, but no decision was made.

Wainwright even talked about his goal recently to improve his career batting average to .200 – currently, he's at .199.

Apparently, before Wainwright and other pitchers were ready to take the field for warmups in Cincinnati on Thursday, Pogue stopped the pitcher to tell him some bad news.

He sent Wainwright into a tizzy after telling him that the league and Players Association finally came to an agreement and ruled that the DH would be in place this season.

"I got all up in arms and he was like, 'April Fools,'" Wainwright says. "Man, he got me. He got me good."
