'That's what we're made for': Wainwright, Molina know they'll be back with Cardinals post-career

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - No matter what happens this offseason, it's clear that Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina plan to be back around the St. Louis Cardinals organization in some capacity in the future.

Both are free agents – the first time ever for Molina – and there's no guarantee they'll be back in St. Louis next year. But in an exclusive interview with Kyle McClellan that was published Monday night on KMOX, the legendary battery mates agreed they'll be back. Maybe not in 2021, but sometime.

McClellan asked if they plan to join the likes of former players like Ozzie Smith, Willie McGee and Chris Carpenter who have all returned as a coach, guest instructor and/or mentor.

"I will. I will," Molina said. "We love this game so much that even when I retire I would love to come back and try to teach the young guys. Because that's us and we love it so much."

Wainwright agreed.

"Yeah, I think so, yeah," Wainwright said. "When I get opportunities to teach what we've learned over the years, I love doing that."

The 39-year-old hurler did say coaching may not be the best fit for either of them right away, because they both have kids they'll want to spend time with.

"I could not be a 9 to 5, or 10 to 7, or 10 to midnight coach like ours," Wainwright says. "Our coaches put in so many hours and way more than players. I've got too many kids for that. We both have to many kids."

And in some good news for Cardinals fans hoping for the next Yadier Molina to come along sometime, he mentioned specifically wanting to work with the catchers "in my cages" during spring training.

"To teach what I've been taught in the past, that's awesome," Molina says. "I want to do that."

But it won't just be in Jupiter, Florida. They'll be back at Busch Stadium in front of the best fans in baseball too.

"I think it's going to be good for our souls to go back and see them every now and then," Wainwright says. "Maybe throw out a first pitch or whatever."
