Chip Towers joined Dukes & Bell to talk about the breaking UGA news today, including why Cade Mays decided to transfer, and where might he end up?
Towers addressed the story of offensive lineman Cade Mays who has announced he’s transferring from Georgia, and his dad suing the university.
“I knew about this story, this is a famous recruiting story, it’s been around ever since Cade Mays signed,” Towers said. “The fact that you had a dismemberment involved in the middle of the recruitment was funny part of the story and I remember talking to Kevin Mays about it back then and it wasn’t something he held against Georgia. I know everyone got his visa stamped for Tennessee, but I wouldn’t close the door just yet on the guy who picked up that finger laying on the ground in ice and that’s Sam Pittman. Cade Mays loves Sam Pittman. That’s the reason he left his backyard of Tennessee is Sam Pittman. And to date Georgia hadn’t felt any attrition of him leaving at least not directly yet.”
Chip told the guys how big of a blow losing Mays is for the Dawgs in 2020.
“The reality is this is a big blow for Georgia in a season of a lot of blows for their offense in particular,” Towers said. “I think it’s going to be a really good defensive team next year. I think better than it was this year which was top 4 or 5, so they’re gonna be really good on that side of the ball. But I’m not sure all of these factors aren’t intertwined, Jake Fromm deciding to leave, all of these lineman deciding to go. We still don’t know what’s up with Ben Cleveland, his father said he missed the bowl for academic reasons and that he’ll come back. But I don’t know unequivocally at this point that he’s coming back and if that’s the case you’re only going to have one returning starter on the offensive line, not to mention your top two tailbacks, the receivers they lost so it’ll be a complete retool on that side of the ball.”
