Earlier today on The Morning Shift Ali Mac, Mike Johnson, and Beau Morgan reacted to the Atlanta Falcons signing outside linebacker/pass rusher Za’Darius Smith to a one-year deal, and explained why they think the Falcons signing Smith was the best option after losing their young pass rushers in Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr.
“I think it’s the best possible solution. I mean there’s really not a lot of other solutions out there. It’s actually a much better solution than I ever imagined they would go for. I was having this conversation multiple times over the weekend about James Pearce’s suspension and I’m like this team is not the kind of team, I didn’t feel like, that’s gonna go sign a veteran pass rusher because it’s just not kind of where they have signaled that they are at right now.” Johnson said
Mike finished his thought by saying “They are more willing it looks like to me to bring along younger guys, but in the position they find themselves in with Jalon Walker out, Bralen Trice has been sideline, they're very thin and so I thought that they would go a different direction honestly and maybe wait until the end of camp, and sign a younger guy develop someone within the system, but yet they found a kind of short term band-aid if you will and I’m here for it man he’s a good player when he can get up and go.”
The Falcons landing the three-time Pro Bowler definitely proves that new General Manager Ian Cuningham and the rest of the Falcons front office aren’t just okay with whatever happening this season and want to make sure they’re building for the future yet being competitive at the same.
