The best way to describe United's match against Inter Miami CF is, as play-by-play announcer Mike Conti stated, "a nightmare scenario." The club lost its third match in a row as former United member, Josef Martinez, scored his 99th and 100th goal of his MLS career to lead Miami to a 2-1 win over United. However, the "nightmare scenario" may be over blown when looking at the big picture.
That big picture was laid out by Jason Longshore when he joined Abe Gordon on the "Abe-T-L Show" and was Gordon argued, "They're (Atlanta United) is actually in a better position than most people think."
Longshore went on to say, "When the noise gets loud externally, I think you can easily lose perspective." He pointed out that United has played more road games this season than home games. United currently sits at 5-3-3, fourth in the MLS. When at home United boasts a 4-1-1 record.
Picking up points on the road is hard in the MLS, and while their road woes are a concern Jason Longshore pointed out, "When you look around the East...Atlanta United, on the road, is better than Columbus, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Miami, Montreal, and Toronto."
United has also been without star striker, Giorgos Giakoumakis, since suffering a hamstring injury on April 23rd against the Chicago Fire. Prior to his injury United had scored multiple goals in five of their first nine matches. United has failed to score multiple goals in their three outings without him.
Once healthy, Atlanta United can work their way towards being .500 on the road. Pair that with their dominant play at home, and a deep postseason run is still a reality.
