The NFL combine is underway and the Atlanta Falcons are inching closer to having to make their decision on what they will do with the number eight overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. On Tuesday, while in Indianapolis, Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot and head coach Raheem Morris spoke with 92-9 The Game’s Andy and Randy Midday Show and fielded questions from the duo about their approach to addressing their quarterback room and what they will be looking for in the ideal candidate to take the mantle under center.
On Wednesday, Steak Shapiro and Drew Butler reacted to some of the response they heard from Fontenot and Morris and after hearing the Atlanta GM tell Andy and Randy that “the right leader” would be one of the factors that play a role in making their decision, as he responded to their question about traits they will be looking for, Butler shared his thoughts on what he believes Fontenot’s comments could mean in regards to the direction the Falcons may go for their next quarterback.
“When Terry Fontenot is saying we need a good leader, we need an effective football player, we need somebody that essentially knows what they’re doing, that to me is essentially showing the cards that free agents are in play,” Butler said as he explained to Shapiro that he does not believe a rookie quarterback would be able to provide the Falcons with the quality of leadership they will be looking for immediately. “You’re not going to get that day one from a rookie, you’re just not,” Butler said as Shapiro agreed in the former NFL punter’s statements.
“It’s just super hard to do and there’s only a few greats that have been able to come in and do that,” Shapiro responded. Click link above to hear Shapiro and Butler’s conversation in its entirety:
