Georgia beefs up receiving corps via transfer portal, adds Rara Thomas, Dominic Lovett

On Thursday, UGA welcomed two of the top wide receivers available in the transfer portal to the roster with the addition of former Mississippi State star Rara Thomas and former Mizzou standout Dominic Lovett.

As a sophomore this season, Thomas, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound from Eufaula, Alabama, led the OTHER Bulldogs in receiving with 626 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 14.2 yards per catch. As a true freshman during the 2021 season, Thomas appeared in 10 games and had 18 catches, 252 receiving yards, and five touchdowns.

Thomas' biggest game of the 2022 season came during the win over 17th-ranked Texas A&M in early October when he hauled in five passes for 134 yards and a touchdown. After a solid performance in a blowout loss to Alabama, he helped Mississippi State to a 39-33 overtime victory over Auburn with six catches for 84 yards and two touchdowns.

The undersized Lovett, a 5-foot-10 sophomore out of St. Louis, racked up 56 receptions for 846 yards and three touchdowns for the Tigers this season. He has the ability to break off big plays, averaging over 15 yards per catch and racking up over 100 receiving yards in four games this season. His biggest game of the season came in mid-September in a 34-17 win against Abilene Christian when he caught seven passes for 132 yards and two scores. He also has the ability to be involved in the run game and add another dimension to the Georgia offense that was missing this season.

It’s clear that head coach Kirby Smart and the UGA coaching staff has made it a priority to add depth to a WR unit that lacked playmakers during the season. Outside of the 51 catches by Ladd McConkey, and having arguably the best tight end in college football with Brock Bowers, no receiver caught more than 27 passes for a Bulldog squad that relied heavily on the run game and the play of the defense this season.

Thomas and Lovett are the first transfers accepted by UGA this offseason while tight end Arik Gilbert and defensive lineman Bill Norton entered the transfer portal recently.  Norton has already committed to the University of Arizona.

Georgia is set to face Ohio State in the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Dec. 31st at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
