The first College Football Playoff ranking come out Tuesday evening, and if the first ranking in the 12-team playoff era looks anything like the current Associated Press poll, the Georgia Bulldogs will be ranked #2 overall, but definitely in the top-five. But is that where they SHOULD be ranked? Are the Georgia Bulldogs the second best college football team in America? Their record says that they are.
After all, Georgia’s schedule is significantly more difficult than the three undefeated teams that the AP has ranked inside the top-12. There are many that think that Georgia, despite a 7-1 record, will not make a deep playoff run as currently constructed. And when I say “as currently constructed”, I am referring directly to Carson Beck as the team’s starting quarterback. Carson Beck has had his moments, and Head Coach Kirby Smart stands firmly behind him, but from the outside looking in it has not looked like very good quarterback play. Beck threw three very untimely interceptions in Saturday’s win against an unranked Florida team, and almost cost Georgia the game. Now Georgia, who would need some serious magic to make the final top-12 should they take a loss, faces a 16th ranked Ole’ Miss team that features a high-powered offense led by quarterback Jaxon Dart. There will be zero room for mistakes Saturday versus Mississippi, and this makes for a very good game. Could Georgia be #2 overall in the first ranking, then completely out of the top-12 in the second? Andy Bunker and Randy McMichael discuss the quarterback play of Carson Beck, and how far they can see Georgia can make it “as currently constructed”.
