In a matchup featuring the past two Georgia High School Association boys lacrosse state champions, the Buford Wolves, who won the Division III title in 2024, hosted the Lambert Longhorn, the defending Division III champs, on Friday in a top 10 showdown as both team entered the night coming off of bounce back wins earlier in the week.
As the first period got underway, Lambert would take a 2-0 lead as Ryan Morrissey and Brayden Tompkins would account for the two Longhorns' goals. However, Buford's Logan Morland would get the Wolves on the scoreboard as he score late in the period and Buford trailed 2-1 at the end of the opening quarter.
In the second quarter, as Tompkins would notch his second goal of the night, the Longhorns outscored Buford 2-1 in the period to take a 4-2 halftime lead and opened the third quarter on a 3-0 run take a 7-2 lead. But the Wolves would have momentum swing in their direction as they closed out the quarter goals from Myer Stovall and Kamden Clack respectively and trailed 7-4 at the end of the period.
In the fourth quarter, Clack would pull Buford within two goals of the Longhorns with his second score of the night, followed by a Cayden Cargile goal with 6:04 remaining in the game and Buford trailing 7-6. As the period continued, and time down to less than a minute, Moreland would come up with a pick and have a chance to time the game, however his shot would be off the mark by inches and Lambert would go on to pick up the 7-6 win.
"A win is a win. It wasn't a pretty win, but we're glad to get the win," Lambert head coach, John Spaide said of the Longhorns victory over Buford, which will assist the Longhorns with gaining homefield advantage in the playoffs and improved their record to 10-1 overall. "It's the biggest thing for us right now," Spaide said as the Longhorns picked up the one point victory.
