Baby eagles take flight in Big Bear

Baby eagles take flight in Big Bear

Sandy and Luna have left the nest after one pushed the other out in a forced fledge on Sunday.

Luna bumped Sandy out of the nest while the two were practicing flapping their wings. Sandy slid down from branch to branch before freeing herself and flying away to a different tree.

Jennifer Voisard with Friends of Big Bear Valley said to KNX News’ Karen Adams that the baby eagles are still very dependent on their parents, Jackie and Shadow, for their survival.

“Jackie and Shadow need to teach them how to live outside of the nest,” said Voisard. “They [Sandy and Luna] don't know how to get their own food yet, so it's a very sensitive time for them.”

Voisard said this means that we will still be seeing the two baby eagles for the time being as they learn how to fly, land, and hunt.

The upcoming fireworks for the 4th of July raise concerns about spooking the eagles. The bright light of the fireworks could cause the eagles to fly into the night when their visibility isn’t great.
